No doubt about it. Living in Northern Idaho, where we experience frigid winters and hot, dry summers, can take a toll on a vehicle. We also have a fair share of dirt roads up here, and we enjoy a lifestyle that involves a lot of outdoor activities, meaning that we use our vehicles to tow boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles or to carry our skis, bicycles, and paddleboards. If we expect them to keep running smoothly on the road and out of the service shop, it’s essential to take proper maintenance steps regularly.

Regular Maintenance is Vital

We love to see our customers at Mike White Ford, but at the same time, we don’t want our customers to have to come in for costly repairs that could have been prevented. We ask our cars and trucks to do a lot for us, so we should return the favor and take care of them.

Here are some necessary maintenance steps and a schedule you can follow. Adhering to these guidelines should help ensure that you only visit our service shop for routine maintenance and repairs – and, of course, to stop in and say “Hi!” – rather than for big-ticket repairs.

  1. Oil changes: Regular oil changes are crucial for any vehicle but are even more important in areas with extreme weather conditions. Cold weather can cause the oil to thicken and become less effective, while hot weather can thin the oil out. The rule used to be every 3,000 miles. Today, thanks to synthetic oils that have lower viscosity and tend to resist degradation, a good rule of thumb is to change your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.
  1. Battery maintenance: Cold weather can be tough on batteries, causing them to lose charge faster. Check your battery’s connections and clean any corrosion at least once a year. If your battery is over three years old and experiencing any problems, it may be time to replace it.
  1. Tire pressure: Check your tire pressure regularly, as extreme temperature swings can cause fluctuations – and, up here, it is not unusual to see a 30 or 40-degree swing in one day. Properly inflated tires not only help with fuel efficiency but also increase the lifespan of your tires. Check your tire pressure at least once a month and before any long road trips.
  1. Tire conditions: Today’s tires can go 50,000 miles or more, so we often forget to check them. But it is critical for your safety to check your tire treads to see how much life you have left in them and if they are wearing unevenly. Have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles – that’s right, at the same time you have your oil changed. And if you buy winter tires, remember to change out your tires between winter and summer to lengthen their life.
  1. Coolant system: Your vehicle’s coolant system is essential for keeping your engine from overheating in hot weather and freezing in cold weather. Ensure your coolant levels are at the proper level and the coolant mixture is appropriate for the area’s weather conditions. You should have your coolant flushed and replaced every two to three years.
  1. Wiper blades: Your wiper blades are essential for good visibility during snow and rain. Inspect your wiper blades for cracks or damage and replace them if necessary. It’s recommended to replace your wiper blades every six months to a year, depending on how much you use them and how they perform.
  1. Air filter: A dirty air filter can reduce fuel efficiency and cause your engine to work harder. Check your air filter regularly and replace it when it’s dirty or clogged. A good rule of thumb is to replace your air filter every 12,000 miles or once a year.
  1. Brake system: Extreme weather conditions can cause your brake system to wear out faster. Check your brake pads, rotors, and calipers regularly for wear and tear. If you notice any unusual sounds or vibrations when braking, get your brake system inspected immediately; don’t risk your safety.
