The Ford F-150 is the flagship of the Ford family of trucks. It is a real workhorse, helping farmers, ranchers, construction crews, campers, boaters, and others haul their trailers and toys to wherever they want, and it is the single-most popular vehicle in the United States. But while everyone knows the F-150, you should be aware that Ford makes several other trucks with different towing capacities to meet different needs.
Today, Ford offers five main truck models, and there is a range of towing capacities for vehicles within these model classes, depending on the engine and other specifications. At least one of these is sure to meet your hauling needs. Let’s look at the towing capabilities for these different Ford trucks.
Ford Maverick
No, this is not the short-lived Ford Maverick compact from the 1970s. It is the new small hybrid pickup truck from Ford. If you still have not heard about or seen the all-new Ford Maverick, it’s no surprise: it just showed up in 2022. But already, the Maverick is gaining adherents, as demonstrated by the fact that the 2023 Ford Maverick is no longer available for retail orders from Ford Motor Company.
The new Ford Maverick is a five-passenger truck with a 5.5-foot bed and a standard towing capacity of 2,000 lbs. This means it is designed for lighter-weight hauls like bass boats or trailers for dirt bikes, jet skis, snowmobiles, motorcycles, or mini-campers. For people who like the Maverick’s styling but need more towing capacity, a Maverick EcoBoost® model with a 4,000 towing capacity is available. It comes in the XL, XLT, and Lariat packages and provides all the comforts of an urban sedan with the utility of a small truck.
Ford Ranger
Although Ford suspended manufacturing its Ranger line of mid-size trucks in 2011, the Ranger made a strong comeback in 2019, thanks to the Ranger’s existing excellent reputation. Like the Maverick, the Ranger comes in XL, XLT, and Lariat packages. The Ranger has superior towing capacity due to its larger engine: 7,500 lbs. This is enough towing capacity for a ski boat, pontoon boat, small horse trailer, or car trailer.
Ford F-150
The Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in Idaho for new and used cars. For consumer uses, the F-150 is considered a light-duty half-ton truck and comes in an astounding eight packages: the XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum, King Ranch, Limited, Tremor, and Raptor. Depending on the tow package, vehicle configuration, engine size, and driveline of the particular truck, F-150 towing capacities range from 5,000 to 14,000 lbs. F-150 trucks are dependably used by construction workers, farmers, ranchers, and all-around Americans who want to have pickup trucks for whenever they need to use a truck.
Ford Lightning
The newest F-150 model is the Ford Lightning, Ford’s entry into the EV truck market. The release of the all-new 2022 F-150 Lightning was announced on May 19, 2021, and demand immediately skyrocketed, with Ford receiving nearly 70,000 pre-orders for the vehicle within the first four days of the release. Even this year, Ford has capped out on retail orders for the 2023 F-150 Lightning model, but dealers – including Mike White Ford – may still have some stock.
Why the demand? The F-150 Lightning continues the Ford tradition of building a reliable, comfortable, feature-packed vehicle for the pickup truck market, but this time in an EV version. The F-150 Lightning comes in Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum packages. The base model Pro has a 240-mile standard range, and a 5,000 lb towing capacity, while the premium Platinum model has a 300-mile standard range and can tow up to 8500 lbs.
Ford Super Duty
The Ford Super Duty trucks include the F-250, F-350, and even F-450. The F-250 is a three-quarter-ton heavy-duty truck, while the F-350 is a one-ton truck. These Super Duty trucks are designed to do what they say: carry out some super-duty functions. With more weight and towing power, these trucks can haul big loads: full-size horse trailers, fifth wheels, large boats, and large trailers. The F-250 can tow up to 15,000 lbs, and the towing capacity of the largest and most powerful F-450 can reach 37,000 lbs.
If you are looking for a commercial rig, Ford Super Duty trucks are available in F-550 and F-600 versions, and MIke White Ford can offer F-650 and F-750 Class 6 and Class 7 Medium Duty trucks, as well.
